Talking About COVID-19 With Your Client
Thank you for providing great care to your clients!
During the pandemic, there may be adjustments and precautions that both you and your client will need to take, and you will have to discuss these changes with your client. These conversations are important to have. Below are some helpful conversation starters for these topics.
Social Distancing and Using Personal Protective Equipment (PPE)
- I would like to go over safety measures that are recommended ways to keep both of us safe, and make sure I can stay healthy and be here for you and other clients. We can get through this! We will just need to make a few changes.
- To continue providing you with the best care, I will be doing tasks by phone whenever possible.
- When I do provide care in person, we should keep 6 feet of distance whenever possible and we should both wear face coverings, to protect ourselves and each other. I will wear additional protections when possible, especially when I help with intimate tasks.
Social Interactions and Visitors
- With everything that we know about the virus, we need to limit our social interactions and household visitors during this time. Each new contact increases the risk of exposing ourselves and each other to COVID-19.
- I understand that sometimes a visitor may come into the house. But, to stay healthy and continue providing you with care, I will need to keep a distance of 6 feet or more. Ideally, the visitor is also wearing a face covering or mask, as recommended by public health officials.
- Prevention measures like hand-washing and using hand sanitizer should also be used during visits.
How You Are Keeping Your Client Safe
What Your Client Can Do to Help
- We are in this together and I know it’s important that we both stay healthy during this time. You can help by continuing to practice good hand and cough hygiene with me, and wear a face covering when possible.
- Your support in me providing you with remote care when possible is very much appreciated. By keeping a distance for certain tasks that do not require in-person interaction, we are helping each other stay healthy.
- Your partnership in implementing additional safety measures (e.g., opening a window to increase ventilation) would also be a great way to support our safety.
- When providing care in person, allowing me to do things like spacing furniture more widely to keep a 6-foot distance helps support social distancing best practices.
- Please, call me if you are feeling sick.
